Don’t Let Debt Kill You

I read through Postsecret every week and this last week I saw the below postcard.

To anyone who may feel the same as this person, please don’t commit suicide over money.

Money isn’t worth your life. 20 thousand, 100 thousand, or even a million dollars in debt isn’t worth as much as you. Though your life insurance policy may have a price, YOU ARE PRICELESS! Priceless to the people who love you and know you and to those who you may not know, who appreciate you.

We hide our financial troubles in the farthest, deepest corner of our lives where no one can find out because we think it will make us look weak or helpless or irresponsible. I believe this is one of the greatest tragedies that we are taught as we grow up. We are taught not to talk about money because it will bring about shame or envy. Instead, we keep quiet and we become different people trying to control the frustration as we deal with money.

There is help out there if you don’t want to speak to people around you. There are Consumer Counseling Centers that can assist you, there are some wonderful books at the library, many people swear by David Ramsey or Clark Howard, among others, for guidance.

Most importantly, please talk to someone, even the Hopeline hotline if you don’t have the money to go to a therapist.

Getting out of our comfort zone may be the only way to get out of debt, but that is so much better than killing yourself and having no choices at all. If you believe you have no one who cares about you, please know even though I don’t know you personally, I do care, I think you are someone important.
