When you can’t find the ultra incredible deals at the local retail store; it’s time to look to the thrift stores, second-hand store, consignment shops, resale stores or whatever other name you can think of to look them up in the yellow pages.

Here are the more well-known national chain thrift stores:
Goodwill stores
Salvation Army stores
Habitat ReStores (habitat for humanity)- Canadian locations and US locations
AMVETS Thrift Store Locations - These are spread around the US and not in a specific region.
MCC Thrift stores (Mennonite) are spread out for US locations and Canadian locations

Some regional chain locations:
If you are in the Colorado area: ARC stores
America’s Thift Store locations are along the southern states from Louisiana to Georgia
Thrift Town covers areas in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas
Housing Works Thrift stores - For the Manhattan area of New York
In Illinois, Indiana and Ohio - The Unique Thrift store chain is found
reader cmdshiftdesign suggests Value Village for the Northwest US (also located in various parts of US,Canada and Australia)

You can also check out The Thrift Shopper or Thrifty Planet Resource Guide for a list of unique places that are not the usual chain store.

These are just a few places to give you a jumping off point - so search, find, shop, buy and save!

I LOVE thrift stores! My favorite has almost every item for $1.25, and the clothes are like new. I can’t imagine paying full price for clothes anymore.

Thanks for this great resource! These days, it just doesn’t make sense for anyone who has a family and a tight income to head to the mall for everything. I shopped at thrift stores tremendously throughout college and used to find plenty of options. Now with two kids under 3 and really just one salary, it’s the smartest option for us all.

I appreciate the links, I moved recently and have no clue where thrift stores are in my neighborhood.

Like everything else, thrift store shopping has become more challenging. Donations are down and of lesser quality, prices are up and I think there are more “professional” thrifters that buying items for resale.
I’m in a huge thrift market and even here in Central Ohio, I can find much better deals at the discount places.
