This summer my roommate and I are challenging ourselves to see how long we can go without the Air Conditioning being switched on.
We have done this before, involuntarily; about 7 years ago we resided in an apartment in downtown Denver that was an east, sun-filled, facing apartment, with windows that slid sideways and wouldn’t hold an A.C unit. We eventually broke down and bought a swamp cooler.
However, if we can live through that, we can live through it this summer as well – to keep our utility bills down and build up our tolerance. Being uncomfortable will not be the name of the game, so we won’t be pushing each other to uncomfortable levels. Common sense will be key.
Here are the Ways we are Keeping Cool:
¥ Shorts around the House
¥ Nothing on our feet (heat escapes through your head AND your feet, this cools you)
¥ Run Ceiling fans and floor fans (Ceiling fans should go Counter-Clockwise)
¥ Place a bowl of ice in front of the floor fan
¥ Keep shades pulled in the heat of the day
¥ Open up shades when the sun goes down
¥ Keep windows/doors open to allow breeze through
We have found that keeping the door open to the garage is not a good idea all the time as our garage can get hot and when the breeze blows through, the hot air comes in with it, instead we keep the front door ajar a bit for the cool air from the walk-way. So consider these types of things when you keep your home cooled down.
¥ Wet a towel and wear it around our neck to keep cool
¥ A wet t-shirt also works wonders as well.
¥ Drink a lot of water- it’s Free!
¥ If we lived in humid weather, I would get a de-humidifier as dry air is cooler.
¥ When it rains, we each grab a bucket of soapy water and wash our cars in the rain to keep cool -FUN!
