I was reading through a post today, Kill the television, keep the shows. It talked about getting rid of TV itself, but watching only shows. They say that you can eliminate addiction ‘brain drain’ and news if you stop watching TV and watch only pre-recorded programs/movies
“Most people can eliminate virtually all of these simply by switching from television to watching downloadable, DVD, or ONLY time-shifted prerecorded (and stripped of all other content) shows, in the way you’d sit down to watch a film.”
However, I believe that you are still influenced by TV through pre-recorded shows and movies. There is product placement within many, if not most shows and movies anymore. Depending on the movie you watch, you will get a ‘canned’ morality play, but nothing beats understanding the morals of the world, then getting out and experiencing it with an open mind. ‘Brain Drain’ to me is simply not flexing your imagination muscle. Pre-recorded or not, you are not using that muscle by sitting passively in front of a monitor.
This got me thinking; let’s try a challenge. No TV for one week, starting Sunday 10/23 to Saturday night 10/29. You may say now that TV has no influence on you and won’t impact you- great! Then why have it at all? If it is for background noise, try a radio. If it is to entertain kids, consider what other options are available to them. Is not watching one show out of the week going to ruin your life?
My Dad always used to say that TV turned the brain to silly putty and would send us kids to go out and play. Playing is hard work, thinking up things to do and entertaining yourself, that can wear a person out. But with enough stretching of the muscle, it can become quite flexible and it’s amazing what the imagination can think up!
So here is the challenge again, the game if you will. Go without TV for one week and let us all know how it went. Did you cave after two hours or three days? Did you make it through but glad you don’t have to do it again? Are you going to try it for another week longer?
If you get frustrated, shoot me an email, we can talk ourselves through it- we will be each others support if need be. I will also have my TV off for the week as well. The cable will be unscrewed and the power cord pulled out. Then on Sunday/Monday of the following week, whoever decided to try this, we all can go over how we did.
