* Mary Hunt on ridding ourselves of Phone books

** I live in My Car - “When you tend not to care what people think of you, but you dress well and stay clean, nobody will ever look at you and assume anything negative about your lifestyle, because they simply won’t know, nor would they understood even if they did know.

*** Mother Earth News has someĀ possibleĀ ideas on “Making Money” - Most are if you live rural, but with a creativity, maybe it could be done in a suburban setting

As someone who has slow dial-up at home, I’m grateful for phone books. I hope they don’t plan to phase them out too soon, or else I’ll have much more trouble trying to find business phone numbers. I still rely on them.

my phone book (white and yellow) has less than 7,000 phone numbers in it. it is amazing how dependent i have become to the land line, the slow internet dial up, and satelite tv. without those i would be completely isolated in forested rural mississippi 1mi. from nearest neighbor and 8 mi. from the nearest town and 35 mi from the nearest little city..hey, without these blessed inventions, i would be a true homesteading pioneer…right? if gas keeps going up..i will soon be able to quit my job as i won’t be able to afford the gas to get to work…right now more than half my income goes to gas. oh well, without all these nice to haves, i know that i can and will survive.

I prefer having phone books, and looking stuff up myself. As it is we have the computer doing all kinds of stuff for us, which is great. But we have GPS, for those of us who can’t, or won’t, read maps. God help us, should anything happen to those satellites, a lot of people would be lost without all their gadgets, that tell them what to do and where to go. I like being self sufficient as much as I can.

I Live in my car was interesting to read, but I would have liked to know more about the day to day living in a car. Joining a health club to take showers or parking the car at night someplace so you can get a full nights sleep doesn’t sound like much of a life to me - unless he has a really big car (which it didn’t sound like) or a small RV (also didn’t have that.)
