One nice, and previously unknown thing about the blogging world is that people want you to review their books (for Free!). And, since I’m not one to turn down many free things…
I was sent the book- Debt is Slavery (and 9 things I wish my Dad had taught me about money), and right off the bat the good thing about this book is that it is 123 pages and that includes the author information as well. You just don’t see too many financial books that are this thin as much. Since the book is short, I will keep my review short so as not to give away the good stuff. Personally, I have written about being a slave to money once, but this book is written much better on the subject than I could do.
First the title, or rather the subtitle. I was a little concerned this was going to be in the same vein as the Rich Dad, Poor Dad books that I have little respect for. But rather, the subtitle refers to Michael Mihalik’s father who passed away while he was still young. You have to admit that a lot of the stuff we learn from our parents are the non-spoken ways we see them interact with money.
Second, since this book is slightly over 100 pages, Michael didn’t waste words and got to the point right away on issues from debt to credit cards and “good debt” to mortgages and the like. Of course they aren’t in depth, but how many ways can you say, -Be Smart about your Money
Finally, I like the way Michael has put together the common sense information with bits of personal experience from his own life as well as bringing up some good questions you would want to ask yourself. Even including a section on Life Energy vs. Cost of Item.
So now the pros and cons in my view:
Pro: Short, good for a student or as a refresher, to the point, personal experience / real world issues
Con: Simplified too much for some, no other resources in the book to go to for expanding on ideas
Overall, a good read and I would give 4 out of 6 coins (new rating system).
The book -Debt is Slavery (and 9 things I wish my Dad had taught me about money) - doesn’t come out until February 28th (according to Amazon)- you can check it out at the publishers website, perhaps pick it up for a student who will be graduating.
